Some product release parties have as much glitz as a gala for a Roman Emperor, but Samsung won’t be popping open many bottles of champagne when it rolls out the much-anticipated Galaxy S5 smartphone in 2014. Plenty of fanfare surrounded the release of the Galaxy S4, but the device went on to dash and consumer and analyst expectations, and let Samsung’s biggest rival in the cell phone market, Apple, gain ground at the premium end of the spectrum.
The Galaxy S5 is set for release in February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Samsung has already sent out invitations to the event, calling it “2014 Edisode 1” in its “Unpacked” series of new product releases. The occasion will have a business first atmosphere and dispense with the pageantry that surrounded the release of the Galaxy S4 at Radio City Music Hall in March 2013, when Samsung billed the Galaxy S4 as “the next big thing”.
The success of the Galaxy S5 depends on Samsung’s ability to distinguish it from the Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5s, a tall task by any stretch of the imagination. So far, Samsung executives have been relatively tight lipped about the S5’s new features, but tech industry insiders have reportedly gotten wind of some of the phone’s new specs. The following is a list of well-educated guesses about what you can expect from the Galaxy S5 when it finally arrives.
Body in metal or plastic
500+ pixel-per-inch count screen
Camera with a 16 MP sensor
2,900 mAh fast-charging lithium ion battery
MicroSD card slot
Removable back that accommodates an extended life battery
There is also a rumor that the Galaxy S5 will come in two different models, a budget model and a premium one. Insiders have the budget model retailing at just under $300, while the premium model is expected to fetch over $1,000. That’s a big difference in price, which suggests an equally big difference in features between the models. If a premium model indeed exists, and you want it but can’t afford it, just wait six months for the price to drop a few hundred dollars.
As mentioned above, the release of the Galaxy S5 is the first in a series of releases from Samsung in the coming year. The company also plans to roll out a new Galaxy smartwatch, a new mobile operating system called Tizen, the Galaxy Note 3, and three new smart tablets: the Note Pro 12.2, Tab Pro 10.1, and Tab Pro 8.4. These releases should catapult Samsung back into serious competition with Apple in the smart tablet and premium call phone markets.
